Since Wankel developed the rotary engine it remained the same until now

The Wankel rotary has used and depended on the apex seal since the invention, and used by all the rotary Mazda motors, but when they break, and that's often if one really loves hard driving, the repair is costly, mainly because of the rarity. Not readily found in scrap yards.

The company called Liquid Piston in Connecticut have developed a new version (albeit very mini sized and fit for drones), that does not require the apex seal and seemingly does not have any thing on the piston to replace. It does look like it generates superb rotational energy with the right combustion fuel.

However this may be a bit late since the motorized vehicle industry is likely moving toward full electric power plants.
